Prithviraj Kapoorbegan Prithvi Theatresin 1944. It ran for 16 years, till 1960, when the company was forced to close down, due to Prithviraj Kapoor\’s ill health. After his death, a Trust called, “Shri Prithviraj Kapoor Memorial Trust & Research Foundation” was formed by his son, Shashi Kapoor in 1975, to continue his work, with the object of encouraging interest in the theatre. The Prithvi Theatre is a subsidiary of this trust.
Prithvi Theatre has performances from Tuesday to Sunday throughout the year with over 550 shows and an average occupancy of 80%. There are plays in Hindi, English, Marathi and Gujarati. Ticket prices vary from Rs 100 to Rs 350. Regular show timings are 6 pm & 9pm. Every November, the theatre becomes home to the annual Prithvi Theatre Festival
It aims to promote professional Hindi theatre, tohost and conduct workshops, to create a theatre resource centre and research library and to provide medical and educational assistance to workers and their children
